The poor weather and a tough stretch of games has been unkind to the South Decatur softball program this season.
Recent cancellations and postponements of conference games meant that the Lady Cougars would end up facing those teams within a one-week span.
Unfortunately for South, the Lady Cougars had to play the top teams in the Mid-Hoosier Conference, mixed in with Class 3A teams already scheduled.
South fell to Triton Central 4-3 Friday on the road. The Tigers held the Cougars to four hits. South started the scoring in the first inning, with Lizzie Hedger reaching on an error to start the action. She went to second on a passed ball and scored on Courtney Billingsley’s single.
South scored two more in the fourth. Clarissa Baltus led off the inning with a single and Chayla Cox pinch ran for Baltus. Olivia Rigby reached on an error, and Sydney Callahan laid down a bunt. Callahan reached on a throwing error that scored Cox, then Ashley Johannigman sacrificed Rigby in for the run.
The Tigers came back with three in the fourth on three hits and three South error, then scored one in the fifth on a home run.
“We played pretty well,” said South head coach Lisa Huff. “We made some mental mistakes in the fourth that cost us a few runs, but we played hard and it is a game we could have won. We are improving on putting the ball in play and seeing improvement each game. We remain positive and will win some of these close games.”
Edinburgh defeated South 17-1 Tuesday. Billingsley hit one single, and scored on a single by Brittany Koors.
Edinburgh tallied 10 hits and played error-free ball.
South fell to Brown County, a Class 3A non-conference team, Wednesday. Senior RayAnn Noble recorded the lone hit for South.
The Eagles had 12 hits and no errors.
South falls to Trinity Lutheran 5-1
South endured a 5-1 loss to Trinity Lutheran Thursday on the road.

Billingsley and Miller each went 2-for-3. Koors, junior Tayler Noble and Olivia Rigby each added a hit.
South committed just one error after struggling defensively earlier in the week.
"We came out and played a lot better than the past two games," said Coach Huff.
