The South Decatur baseball team picked up two big wins this week, improving to 8-5 overall.
The Cougars defeated Indiana School for the Deaf 17-1 Tuesday. South needed just nine hits on offense, while Deaf School committed eight errors and walked 10 Cougar batters. Senior Taylor Campos and the Cougars held Indiana Deaf to four hits.
“We took advantage of mistakes they made,” said head coach Andy Seegers. “We were patient. We got timely hits.”
Austin Petro went 2-for-3 with three RBI’s. Taylor Kopplin was 2-for-4 with two RBI’s, and Tyler Hahn went 2-for-2 with two runs, a double and an RBI.
South beat Trinity Lutheran 3-2 Thursday on the road.
South scored three runs on five hits and made three errors, while Trinity Lutheran scored twice on two hits, and committing three errors.
Senior Connor Hermesch posted the winning decision on the mound, while senior Taylor Campos recorded the save.
According to head coach Andy Seegers, the turning point of the game was a fifth-inning home run off the bat of senior Byron Balser.
“Byron put a spark in it with a leadoff home run,” said Seegers.
Producing the winning run was senior Matt Gatewood on a fielder’s choice that scored Tyler Hahn, who had reached on a single.
Also providing extra bases were Hermesch and Aaron Haley.
