Greensburg Daily News
The Greensburg junior varsity softball team split its past two games. Three other scheduled games, against North Decatur and a double-header against South Ripley, were canceled.
Greensburg visited South Decatur Monday and won 17-5.
According to head coach Russell Wilhoit, it was the first time Wilhoit’s team played the South JV in his four years as coach. He said Greensburg added South when Lawrenceburg canceled.
Greensburg at one time trailed 4-3 before breaking it open in the fifth inning. The Pirates scored twice in the first and led 3-2 in the fourth, but South scored twice in the fourth to go ahead 4-3. The Pirates scored six times in the fifth inning and eight more in the sixth.
Allie Geis led Greensburg’s 15-hit attack with three hits, including a triple. Whitney Tallent added two doubles. Renee Kramer and Katie Bennett each added two hits. Shanda Workman, Emma Wolter, Kelsie Fischer, Maddy Schroeder, Becca Koors and Paige Clemons all chipped in with a single. Kramer drove in four runs, while Workman, Geis and Bennett each drove in two. Wolter, Kelsie Fischer, Macy Kaiser, Tallent, Koors and Clemons each drove in one run.
Emma Wolter (2-2), pitching in her fourth game, allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits. She struck out five and walked four.
Courtney Billingsley suffered the loss, striking out one batter.
Each team committed six errors.
Pirate JV falls to East Central
Greensburg fell to visiting East Central 15-9 Thursday.
The Trojans jumped ahead with two runs in the third inning, five in the fourth and four in each of the next two frames.
Greensburg salvaged the score with eight in the fifth inning and one in the sixth.
The Lady Pirates committed six errors, while the Trojans played error-free.
Greensburg tallied 10 hits, led by Shanda Workman, Kelsie Fischer, and Maddy Schroeder with two each. Whitney Tallent, Allie Geis, Paige Clemons, and Bri Foster (first hit of season) all chipped in with singles. Workman drove in four runs. Schroeder and Fischer each had two RBI’s, while Tallent and Katie Bennett each had one.
Tallent (3-3) pitched a complete game that lasted only six innings. The game was called after six because an inning could not start before 9 p.m. Tallent allowed 15 runs (eight earned), struck out three and walked one.
The Lady Pirates are now 5-7 with two weeks remaining. Greensburg hosts East Central’s freshmen Monday at 5 p.m. The Pirates travel to South Dearborn Tuesday for a JV game after the varsity game at 7 p.m., and the JV team visits Columbus North for a 5 p.m. game. Greensburg visits East Central for another freshman game Thursday at 5 p.m. The JV team visits Shelbyville for the annual Shelbyville Invitational, which includes South Dearborn, Shelbyville and Batesville. Greensburg will play at least two games.
