The South Decatur varsity baseball team welcomed Eastern Hancock to the conference Thursday night with a 24-11 victory on the road.
The visiting Cougars pounded out 20 hits, including five home runs. Senior Byron Balser highlighted the attack with a grand slam, while senior Connor Hermesch added two home runs.
South, which improves to 6-0 in the Mid-Hoosier Conference, scored two more runs in the fourth before the Royals put up seven of their own in the bottom of the third.
South, now 10-6, scored four runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to cap a season-best offensive outing.
“It was a slugfest tonight,” said South head coach Andy Seegers.
Connor Hermesch recorded the win on the mound, adding a 4-for-6 day at the plate. He hit two home runs and a double. Matthew Gatewood, who picked up the save, went 4-for-6. Damen Martin went 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in. Taylor Kopplin added a home run.
The Royals scored 11 runs on 11 hits and committed three errors, while the Cougars committed just one error.
The Cougars return to the field Saturday with a trip to Edinburgh at 10 a.m.
