Pirate netters bow out in Sectional Final

Greensburg — The Greensburg girls varsity tennis team gave itself a chance to win a fourth sectional title in four years.

Greensburg beat Jennings County 5-0 Thursday night. Danielle Schroeder beat Tori Crick 57-, 6-3, 6-2 at first singles.

Senior Kaeli Fong beat Lucy Hearne 6-2, 6-0 at second singles.

Junior Claire Welage at third singles topped Emily Vawter 6-3, 6-7, 7-6.

Sophomores Courtney Nelson and Caroline Pratt won their first doubles match over Megan Kelsay and Alexus Smith 6-3, 6-0.

Freshman Abby Bailey and sophomore Olivia Slusher topped Brittany Lykins and Elaine Lykins 6-3, 6-2.

The Lady Pirates advanced to the Greensburg Sectional 26 championship match Saturday, facing favored Southwestern Hanover.

The host Pirates squared off against the Rebels and their 21-2 record, but it was the Pirates who jumped out in front early in the battle. Greensburg won the first set at three spots and was up big in another before the heavy favorites finally got on track.

At first singles, Danielle Schroeder blitzed through her first set without dropping a game. Abbey Garrett was able to get a few games in the second set, but Schroeder punched her ticket to advance in the singles portion of the tourney by her win.

At second singles, Kaeli Fong was seemingly in control up 5-2 in the first set before the wheels came off and Fong lost 7-6.

“Kaeli fought hard,” said Bailey, “but she was up against a girl that plays a brand of tennis that can be very frustrating to face.”

At third singles, Claire Welage just never got on track and dropped her contest in straight sets. On the two doubles courts, where Southwestern had their strongest players, Greensburg was off to a great start. Courtney Nelson and Caroline Pratt and Abby Bailey and Olivia Slusher both won their first sets by a 6-4 count.

“Both doubles teams started very well,” said coach Bailey. “I could not have been more pleased with the doubles play here late in the season.”

However, Southwestern was able to use their experience and settled in, and both were able to win in three sets.

“This team has shown great improvement from the start of the season to this point,” said Bailey. “After our big win on Thursday over Jennings County, we just could not sustain our play throughout the match on Saturday. Southwestern had several seniors and the experience showed. We will miss Kaeli Fong, but we have a great core returning next season and I am looking for good things.”

It was not known as of Monday who Danielle Schroeder will play at Seymour.
