South spikers win on Senior Night

---- — The South Decatur volleyball team honored its four seniors Monday night, celebrating Senior Night with a three-set win over visiting Crothersville.

The Lady Cougars topped the Lady Tigers 25-10, 25-16, 25-23 and concluded the regular season with a 21-9 record.

South honored seniors Clarissa Baltus, Courtney Billingsley, Ashley Johannigman, Julia Miller and exchange students Anesa Dijab and Oksana Hrynyuk.

“Great game for the seniors,” said South head coach Lisa Bennett. “They will be missed.”

South jumped out to a 16-1 lead on the Tigers. Multiple kills by Johannigman and two more by junior Megan Niese helped the Cougars put away the Tigers early, before the visitors went on a mini run.

“Everyone played their hearts out tonight and it was very evident by watching them,” said Bennett. “They played together tonight, which is a great feeling going into sectionals, and they looked like they were having fun. It was enjoyable to watch them play tonight.”

South served 65-for-74 (87.8 percent) on the night. Billingsley served 23-for-24 with three aces and a team-high 19 points. Junior Brittany Koors served 15-for-15 with a team high four aces. Baltus served 9-for-9 with an ace and six points. Miller served 9-for-9 with five points.

South hit 71-for-79 with 30 kills. Johannigman led the attack with 13 kills on 22-for-23 hitting, while Niese hit 13-for-15 with two kills. Miller hit 10-for-13 with six kills, while Koors hit 7-for-7 with three kills. Junior Olivia Watkins hit 3-for-4 and Haleigh Haining hit 1-for-1.

Koors led South with 18 assists.

Digs: Koors 5, Niese 5, Mariah Green 4, Baltus 4, Billingsley 4, Johannigman 3, Miller 2, Watkins 1.

Johannigman and Miller each tallied three solo block-kills.

Bennett commented on the seniors afterward.

“Our seniors will definitely be missed next year,” she said, “and it was nice to have a great send off for them toward the end of the season.”

South plays Shawe Memorial in the Hauser Sectional 60 Saturday at 12:30 p.m. after a first-round bye. The Championship is 7 p.m. Saturday.
