---- — The Greensburg cross country season ended Saturday morning at the Carmel Semi-state meet. A pair of sophomore runners represented the Pirates with individual breakthroughs that culminated in the Semi-State tournament.
Sophomore Peyton Buening represented Greensburg in the boys’ race. Buening finished 137th place in a time of 17:55.
According to head coach Troy Davis, Buening concluded his sophomore season with a personal best time of 17:19 at the Southport Invitational. He was all-conference and all-sectional for the second time. He recorded his first victory when he won the Decatur County meet. He was also the first Greensburg runner to compete in the IHSAA semi-state since 1999.
Sophomore Shelby Pake ran in the girls’ race Saturday. She crossed the finish line in 20:19 to earn 77th overall. Pake’s sophomore season ended with her holding the freshman and sophomore records for 5000m. She won four races during the 2013 season. Additionally, Pake was all-Decatur County, all-sectional, and all-regional for the second year in a row.
“I was really proud of the way that Peyton and Shelby raced this morning,” said Davis. “Both of them competed against some of the best runners in the state. They gained some great experience, and this race will be very beneficial to them in the future.”
