The North Decatur girls basketball team captured another conference victory Thursday night, rolling over visiting Edinburgh 65-52.
The Lady Chargers improve to 4-1 in the Mid-Hoosier Conference and 9-7 overall, good for a second-place tie with Southwestern (Shelbyville).
North trailed midway through the first quarter, but senior Jenna Meyer and the hosts charged ahead before the quarter ended. Junior Abby Lamb hit a 3-pointer to put her team on top 16-14 going into the second quarter.
Edinburgh went ahead one more time, 20-19, but Meyer’s seven points helped North surge ahead for good. Six different Chargers scored in the decisive 19-9 second quarter, with Lamb striking again from long range to send North into halftime ahead 35-23.
Junior Anna Wallpe scored seven points in the third quarter as North led 54-38 after three.
Head coach Brad Bryant was pleased to see different contributions from several players.
“It’s nice when you look and see eight different girls score,” he said. “We had good balance. We shared the ball well tonight. We had some good looks in transition, too. All-in-all, the girls really played solid minutes for us tonight.”
Meyer finished with 25 points, while Anna Wallpe and Lamb each scored nine. Andrea Volk scored eight, Cindy Krieger scored six, and freshman Mary Hughes added five. Emma Geis added two and Veronica Yager chipped in one.
Bryant applauded Lamb’s shooting performance and “her ability to knock down shots from the perimeter.”
He also noted Krieger’s defensive contributions since she has returned from an injury.
“Defensively, we’ve been real happy about our depth all season,” he said. “She plays with some energy out there.”
According to Bryant, Hughes stepped right in earlier in the season because of injuries, and has provided a spark.
“She defends well and rebounds well,” he said. “Mary was more active tonight. We know she can score for us. I wanted her to look to score more, and she was more active tonight.”
Edinburgh falls to 4-12 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
The North junior varsity team won 33-10. Alison Wallpe led her team with nine points. Ashlin Weintraut scored eight and Megan Hoover added six, while Samantha Krieger scored four. Laura Haunert scored three, Morgan Nobbe added two and Morgan McKinney chipped in one.
North next travels to Hauser for a conference matchup Tuesday night.
