Charger boys struggle on road

The North Decatur boys basketball team played two weekend games on the road. The Chargers fell to Morristown 66-51 Friday and lost to Union County 61-53 Saturday.

North fell to Morristown 66-51 after trailing 23-13 at the first stop. The Yellow Jackets took a 43-31 lead into the break and outscored North 23-20 in the second half.

Lecher led his team with 14 points, including three of North’s seven triples. Hammersmith added 12 points with a triple. Ricke scored eight points (2 triples) and Johnson added a triple and a 4-for-4 effort at the foul line for seven points. Geis scored four, and adding two apiece were Kirchhoff, senior Dylan Koors and Donovan Meyer. North shot 6-for-9 on free throws in the game.

North’s JV team fell to Morristown 50-27. The Chargers trailed 8-4 after the first six minutes, but came back to tie the score at 10 going into the break. Morristown, though, outscored North 23-11 in the third quarter and 17-6 in the fourth.

Six different players scored for North. Freshman Donovan Meyer scored a team-high eight points. Freshman Evan Wallpe followed with six, while Brian Williamson scored five. Eric Moorman’s 3-pointer, Arek Holloway’s three points and Andrew Hocker’s two rounded out the scoring.

Ten three’s not enough against Patriots

Against Union County, North fell behind 18-4 after the first eight minutes. The Chargers, though, came back and pulled to within seven, trailing just 28-21 at the break with a 17-10 second quarter run.

The teams played even in the second half, with the Patriots outscoring the Chargers 33-32 after halftime.

Although North shot just 1-for-2 from the foul line, the visitors sank 10 shots from 3-point range. Five different Chargers hit a 3-ball. Senior John Hammersmith led his team with 14 points, including one trey. Freshman Zach Johnson followed with a trio of triples for 13 points, while Andrew Hocker’s four triples led his team. He scored 12 points. Freshman Dayne Lecher scored five points, including a 3-ball. Junior Brock Ricke scored four, senior Kevin Geis added a triple and senior Jason Kirchhoff scored two.

The JV Chargers were victors in the first game 42-38. Evan Wallpe led his team with 19 points. Meyer scored seven, Austin Brown scored six and Arek Holloway added five. Rounding out the scoring was Brian Williamson with a 3-pointer and Eric Moorman with two.

North hosts two games this weekend. The Chargers host Class 3A Batesville Friday and Class 4A East Central Saturday night.
