Lady Pirates rally past Twisters

Greensburg — The Greensburg girls basketball team found themselves in a defensive battle against visiting Oldenburg Academy Thursday, but the hosts pulled out a 37-32 win.

The Lady Pirates climbed back to the even mark on the season at 9-9 by winning four of their past five games.

The lastest victory required a four-quarter defensive effort and a third-quarter comeback. Greensburg led 14-12 after the first quarter on the strength of four 3-pointers. Sophomore Abbey Denton hit two, while senior Clare Owens and freshman Taylor McIntosh each hit one.

OA climbed ahead and led 18-16 at the break, but Greensburg rallied to take the lead for good in the third quarter. Owens’ 3-point play put her team up 22-21 with 4:01 left in the third.

Head coach Mike Miller said his team is elevating its level of play as the sectional tournament approaches.

“We have some things going on that often happen late in the season,” said Miller. “We’re executing, and we’re playing together. The kids are doing the little things well. We’re getting better screens and making better cuts. Everyone’s stepping up defensively.”

Sophomore Jessica Banaschak led Greensburg with 11 points, while Owens followed with 10 and Denton added six. Senior Shelby Ward scored five, including a 3-pointer. Rounding out the scoring was McIntosh with a triple and freshman Keauna Schultz with two.

Miller credited a few players in particular who are filling in for junior Joanna Redelman, who is out for the rest of the year with an injury.

“Jessica is stepping up,” he said. “Taylor is going to do nothing but get better. Shelby and Clare did things that we really needed. We’ll see if it can continue.”

Greensburg’s junior varsity team won 35-29. Kalynne Asche led the Pirates with 11 points and Megan Schmidt followed with six. Maddi Hellmich and Emma Wolter each scored five, including a 3-pointer. Sydney Reynolds and Kasey Moeller each hit triples, while Allie Geis chipped in two.
