Greensburg — Despite North Decatur’s 66-55 loss to visiting Batesville Friday night, head coach Kyle Nobbe viewed the Charger boys basketball team’s effort as a turn-the-corner point of the season.

North played even with the Bulldogs in the first eight minutes, trailing 16-13, and cut a double-digit deficit to within seven points in the fourth quarter. The Chargers had trailed by as many as 17 before going on a 25-15 run that spanned the start of the final period.

“We had a lot of stretches where we played well,” said Nobbe. “I was real proud of our kids. They played with toughness and effort.”

Batesville went ahead early until North closed the gap with a chance to go ahead. Senior John Hammersmith tied the game at 8-all with a pair of free throws. North answered a Bulldog 3-pointer with its own, tying it again at 13 until sophomore Bryan Hoeing’s 3-ball lifted the guests to a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Batesville, though, maintained a six-point lead for most of the second quarter. North freshman Dayne Lecher helped bring the score within striking distance of tying with four quick points, but the visitors made free throws down the stretch to hold off a North comeback.

Senior John Hammersmith led North with 21 points, including 4-for-5 from the foul line. Freshman Dayne Lecher followed with 11 points, while freshman Zach Johnson scored eight, including a pair of 3-pointers. Senior Jason Kirchhoff and junior Brock Ricke each scored six. Kirchhoff hit 4-for-4 from the foul line. Freshman Andrew Hocker chipped in three points.

North shot 10-for-14 from the line and made five triples.

Sophomore Bryan Hoeing led Batesville with 21 points, while senior Mike Hoeing added 11.

The North junior varsity team fell 38-22 in the first game. Evan Wallpe scored eight points to lead North. Donovan Meyer scored seven, Austin Brown scored three, and Arek Holloway and Brian Williamson each added two.
