The Greensburg varsity wrestling team turned in its best sectional performance in the three years that Matt Cochran has been the head coach of the Pirates.
The Greensburg grapplers sent eight wrestlers to the Jeffersonville Regional, which will take place this weekend. All eight wrestlers will advance to the Jeffersonville Regional Saturday.
Greensburg placed fifth overall in the Jennings County Sectional Tournament, scoring 125 points. Columbus East won the sectional with 240 points. Jennings County followed with 211 for second place. Columbus North’s 177 points was good for third, while Madison was fourth with 133.
“This is the most wrestlers Greensburg has sent to the regionals in quite a long time,” said Cochran afterward. “We are definitely excited to be sending this many to regional. The wrestlers continue to build the momentum and do a good job.”
Freshman Brandon Butz finished runner-up in the 113-point weight class.
Two Pirates clinched tickets to the regional with third-place finishes. Junior Colten Black placed third at 182 pounds, while junior Drew Neisius finished in third place at 195 pounds.
Placing fourth and qualifying were sophomore Jordan Smiley (126), junior Joe Buening (152), senior Justin Dance (160), junior Matt Scheumann (220) and sophomore Nathan Hayes (285).
Wrestling in their final matches of the season were senior John Cook (170) and junior Joel Chase (138) for sixth place.
“We are excited about our results, and now we look forward to trying to see how many we can get on to semi-state,” said Cochran.
Wrestling will begin at 9 a.m. at Jeffersonville High School.
