The Greensburg and North Decatur boys basketball teams began the winter season Friday with new-look squads in front of a packed gym at Greensburg.
The hosting Pirates, ranked at the top of the Associated Press Class 3A poll, defeated the Chargers 90-46. Greensburg (1-0) led 27-13 after the first quarter and 49-25 at the break.
Pirate junior Bryant McIntosh scored a game-high 23 points. Senior Shane Ploeger and junior Collin Rigney each scored a career-high 15, while sophomore Ryan Welage scored 12. Junior Sean Sellers scored nine, while senior Tyler Burcham added five.
Other scoring: Riley Billieu 3, Tye Fleetwood 2, Macy Holdsworth 2.
Greensburg shot 13-for-14 (92.8 percent) from the foul line.
Leading the Chargers (0-1) was senior John Hammersmith with 11 points. In his varsity debut, freshman starter Zach Johnson scored eight, as did junior Josh Weintraut off the bench. Senior Jason Kirchhoff scored seven, while junior Brock Ricke added five.
Other scoring: Kevin Geis 3, Matthew Laudick 2, Luke Badgley 2.
North shot 10-for-12 from the line.
Pirate JV wins first game
The Greensburg junior varsity team won 46-32. Freshman Drew Foster led Greensburg with 16 points, Josiah Buell scored 12 and Tye Fleetwood added nine. Bryce Bennett scored three, while Cody Bausback, Kevin Beaver and Riley Burkert each added two.
Eric Moorman and Luke Badgley each led North with eight points, while Arek Holloway scored five. Andrew Hocker scored three points, while Brian Williams, Evan Wallpe, Donovan Meyer and Matthew Laudick added two apiece.
