The Greensburg girls basketball team defeated Class 1A Waldron 53-50 Tuesday in a come-from-behind overtime thriller. A resilient Lady Pirate squad made clutch shots late in the
Waldron led 37-30 after three quarters. Junior Joanna Redelman pulled Greensburg to within five early in the fourth period, and a score by Banaschak made it a 37-34 game. Waldron had gone back ahead by eight, but Banaschak answered back with scores throughout the waning minutes of regulation.
Pirate senior Shelby Ward hit a 3-pointer to tie the game near the two-minute mark of the fourth, and later gave her team the lead at 45-43 with 1:30 left. Despite another Banaschak basket, Waldron free throws tied the game at 49-all to end regulation.
Senior Clare Owens stepped up defensively in the extra session, enabling her team to execute in the clutch.
Redelman put Greensburg up 51-49, a lead that the Pirates protected and kept. With Greensburg leading by two at 52-50, Owens blocked a shot with less than 20 seconds left. Redelman then grabbed a defensive rebound, and freshman Taylor McIntosh was fouled seconds later. A free throw gave her team the final margin of victory.
Greensburg improves to 5-4 on the season, lifting itself over the even mark. Its most recent overtime win was Nov. 22, 2008.
Banaschak led visiting Greensburg with a career-high 23 points. Her total also marks a season high for her team, and the most for a Lady Pirate since Jennifer Redelman’s 23 points as a senior last season.
Redelman followed with 11 points to lead the rest of the Pirates. Ward followed with seven and freshman Keauna Schultz scored four. McIntosh and sophomore Abbey Denton each scored three, senior Heidi Dance added two, and Owens chipped in one.
The junior varsity Lady Pirates defeated the Mohawks in the first game, 32-26. Kasey Moeller led Greensburg with 10 points. Keauna Schultz followed with seven, while Emma Wolter added four. Scoring three apiece were Allie Geis, Megan Schmidt and Kalynne Asche, while Maddy Schroeder chipped in two.
Greensburg will host Batesville Friday night for an EIAC clash.
