Pirates seize outright EIAC crown

Greensburg — The Greensburg varsity basketball team has arrived at the end of another season with the outright Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference championship wrapped up, its second straight.

The Pirates enter the Greensburg Sectional 29 Tournament with a 39-1 mark in their last 40 regular-season games, and 42-2 in their past 44 overall.

Greensburg (19-1 overall and 9-1 in the EIAC) split the regular-season pair with Batesville, the team the Pirates would play if both teams advance past the first round.

Greensburg defeated visiting East Central 63-40 Friday to claim the outright EIAC crown. The hosts celebrated Senior Night, honoring Riley Billieu, Tyler Burcham and Shane Ploeger.

Greensburg jumped out to a 10-2 lead, thanks to 3-pointers from juniors Collin Rigney and Macy Holdsworth. The Pirates led 17-9 after the first eight minutes.

Junior Sean Sellers, on his way to a double-double, pleased the home crowd with a pump-fake for a 3-pointer, then sliced through defenders and across the baseline to throw down a two-handed slam dunk. The early second-quarter lead grew to 14 at 25-11 until the Trojans cut it to 10. Greensburg entered the break with a 30-17 edge on the strength of four straight points from junior Bryant McIntosh, who led everyone with 13 points.

Holdsworth opened the second-half scoring with another 3-ball, and McIntosh later added on that made it 36-18.

The Pirates enjoyed their first 20-point lead when Holdsworth went coast-to-coast to the basket, making it 43-22 with 2:20 left in the third. Greensburg led 45-26 at the third stop.

Sellers converted a 3-point play with 6:56 left, spreading it back to 20 points at 48-28. He later capped a 7-0 Greensburg run with a tip-in, increasing it to 52-28. Sellers scored seven points in the fourth, and senior Riley Billieu added two baskets for the final margin.

McIntosh led all scorers with 20 points. He shot 4-for-4 from the foul line and added a pair of treys. Sellers scored 16 (2-for-4 at the foul line). Holdsworth’s two treys contributed to his eight points, while sophomore Ryan Welage scored six points. Billieu and senior Shane Ploeger (2-for-4) each scored four, Rigney scored three and junior Tom Lawrence chipped in two.

Greensburg shot 8-for-12 from the foul line for 75 percent, while the Trojans shot 10-for-15 (67 percent).

The Pirates will play South Dearborn tomorrow night at 6 p.m. in the first round of the sectional tournament. The winner will advance to play Friday in the Semifinal against the winner of Wednesday’s second game between Batesville and Franklin County.
