Teen charged as an adult in Lawrence Central rape

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office confirms a 16-year-old is being charged as an adult after a reported rape at Lawrence Central High School.

Officials say the incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday at the school.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a female student was walking back from lunch with a student named Jabril Scruggs. The girl told police Scruggs said his mother was picking him up for an appointment, so they walked toward the exit of the gym. She said Scruggs walked outside, but did not see his mother, so he came back in.

The girl told police when Scruggs walked back into the school, he walked up behind her, started putting his hands on her and moving her toward a hallway. The girl told police she tried using her body weight to lean back because she did not want to be pushed into the closed off hallway.

According to court documents, despite the girl saying”no” several times, Scruggs pulled off the girl’s sweatpants and underwear and forced sexual intercourse with her. After the incident, Scruggs walked out of the hallway and waited for the victim.

Court documents report a school official saw the two together. The teacher reportedly asked them why they were in the gym and Scruggs “did all the talking.” The school official later told police the female student “didn’t seem right,” but she didn’t say anything so he sent the two students back to class.

The probable cause affidavit states the victim then went to the bathroom, cleaned herself up, and then used a friend’s phone to call her mother. After making the calls, the fame victim told her friend what happened in the gym. The girl and her friend then went to the school nurse’s office to report the rape.
