Missing kayaker in Flat Rock River

Greensburg Daily News

---- — Indiana Conservation Officers are On Scene and Searching for Missing Kayaker in Flat Rock River in Bartholomew County.

Indiana Conservation Officers and the Bartholomew County Water Rescue Team resumed their search Monday morning for Enrique Quinonez, 27, of Kalamazoo Mich., on the Flat Rock River in Columbus.

Water conditions have improved, but still pose too much of a threat to deploy divers. Personnel on scene have deployed sonar to aid in the search.

Indiana Conservation Officers and the Bartholomew County Water Rescue Team have suspended the search for Enrique Quinonez Sunday due to the lack of daylight.

Search personnel were able to deploy a Remote Operated Vehicle (R.O.V.) that has sonar capabilities to search the area. Due to fast moving water, the conditions were less than ideal. The fast moving water also restricted the use of divers due to safety concerns.

Indiana Conservation Officers would like to urge citizens to be mindful when around bodies of water that are in flood level or exhibit fast moving water.

Initial investigation has revealed that Quinonez and a friend launched their kayaks north of the east fork of the White River on Flat Rock River. A short time later, Quinonez’s kayak capsized. Quinonez was initially pulled to a nearby tree by the friend. He then for some reason lost his grip on the tree and went under water.

It was also learned that Quinonez was not in possession of a life jacket and could not swim.
