Indy tunnel worker killed 250 feet underground

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A worker on the Deep Rock Tunnel Connector died early Friday morning at a work site on the city’s southwest side.

Shortly after 3 a.m. emergency personnel were called to the 6600 block of South Tibbs Avenue on a report of an unconscious man with a head injury. The man, later identified as 25-year-old William Isaac Simpson, died. A Citizens spokeswoman said no other workers were injured and there was no structural compromise of the tunnel.

Citizens spokeswoman Sarah Holsapple said Simpson was a contractor with SKJV.

“Citizens would like to extend its condolences to the family of the victim,” Holsapple said Friday morning.

Simpson was 7 miles into the tunnel, near Lucas Oil Stadium.

The work site was shut down while investigators work to find more details about the incident. The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or IOSHA, was called in to investigate, which is standard procedure. IOSHA estimated the agency’s investigation would take two or three months to complete.

Between eight and 10 workers were inside the tunnel when the worker died. It wasn’t clear where in the 8-mile stretch of tunnel the incident happened.

The Deep Rock Tunnel Connector is the first part of the broader DigIndy project, which will be a 25-mile network of sewage tunnels. The project was created to comply with federal mandates to reduce sewer overflow. Citizens projects the tunnels will be complete in 2025.
