MADISON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana State Police say a child was killed in a crash that shut down Interstate 69 in both directions Tuesday afternoon near the Delaware/Madison County line.
Six other people were injured in the crash that happened around noon at the 234 mile marker, at State Road 32/67. This is the exit for Daleville/Chesterfield.
A second child was taken by medical helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. An adult was taken by helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital.
Officials at the scene said a car with five people inside abruptly stopped in the right lane on the northbound side of I-69. As a result, a pickup with two people inside crashed into the back of the car. Investigators weren’t immediately sure what caused the car to stop, as there were no traffic backups in the area at the time.
The crash caused traffic to stretch for miles. But as of 2:15 p.m., traffic was able to get through.
