Fire destroys rural home

Cause still under investigation

Greensburg — MILLHOUSEN – No one was injured when fire destroyed a home in rural Decatur County Friday night.

Letts Volunteer Fire Department Chief Matt Morrow told the Daily News fire broke out shortly after 9 p.m. at a residence located at 1938 West County Road 1000 South in Marion Township.

Emergency services were notified by two occupants of the home who escaped without injury and called 911 from a neighbor’s house.

Morrow reported heavy fire, smoke and water damage at the residence, which is deemed to be a total loss.

The owner of the home, Connie Taylor, was away at the time of the blaze and was made aware late Friday. The family was assisted by the Red Cross and has found temporary housing in a local hotel.

Morrow said he and other firefighters on scene were able to confine the blaze to the kitchen and garage areas.  It took 35 to 40 minutes for fire crews to knock down the majority of the flames. The chief said the fire led to some structural collapse which made the situation more difficult for those battling the blaze.

No cause for the fire has been determined as of yet. The state fire marshal is expected to make a ruling on the cause in the near future.

Morrow said the two occupants of the home “did the right thing” by immediately evacuating the residence and calling 911 from a safe location.

He said making certain your home has working smoking detectors is of the utmost importance in safety in situations such as this.

In addition to the Letts Volunteer Fire Department, members of Decatur County EMS, Decatur County REMC, the Decatur County Highway Department, Millhousen Volunteer Fire Department and the Westport Volunteer Fire Department offered assistance at the scene.

The Daily News will have further details on this story as they become available.
