The top stories of 2012: Westhafer announces retirement

Greensburg — Mere days into 2012 brought news that the Honorable Judge John Westhafer, having served 35 years in the Decatur County Circuit Court, would call it a career at the end of the year.

Westhafer announced his retirement in early January with plans to step down Dec. 31.

Westhafer told the Daily News in January he felt the time was right for him to leave the bench.

“I think it’s time to step aside and give someone else a chance to do the job,” Westhafer said. “I want to go out now, on my own terms, while I’m — hopefully — liked.”

Westhafer’s position was sought by local attorneys Timothy Day and Robert Wickens, who spent the better part of the year campaigning for the honor of succeeding the well-respected Circuit Court judge. Day won by a wide margin in the Nov. election, and he’ll be sworn in by Westhafer Dec. 31.

Judge Westhafer plans to stay busy in retirement, dedicating time to his five grandchildren and also to plenty of travel opportunities.
