Famous musicians to be interviewed by Greensburg High students

Greensburg — A radio-thon featuring several famous artists and bands will be hosted by Greensburg Community High School (GCHS)students Tuesday, Oct. 30, according to GCHS teacher John Pratt.

With the usage of WTRE’s studio, listeners will have the opportunity to bid for a song to be dedicated live by one of many famous country and classic-rock bands.

Twenty bands and musicians will be participating, including Peggy Davison from The Angels (My Boyfriend’s Back), The Guess Who (American Woman, and These Eyes), Grand Funk Railroad (We’re an American Band and Some Kind of Wonderful) and many more. The auction will end 15 minutes before the song is played.

Band members will call in live for an interview conducted by a Greensburg High School student. After the interview, the artist will dedicate their famous song to whomever won the bid on their song. The dedication can be conducted however the bid winner wishes; The song may go to a person, cause, or perhaps because the winner just likes that song, according to Pratt.

The program will be recorded and can be listened to nationally, and internationally through WTRE’s website, 1330wtre.com. According to program coordinator and Greensburg High School teacher, John Pratt, all proceeds will be given to a Haitian orphanage which was befriended after the 2010 earthquake.

Pratt said previous fund-raisers had raised money to help build a water filtration plant, “The children have been living in a tent,” Pratt said. “We’re hoping the money will go to building a home or school.”

The owner of the Haitian orphanage and the children will also be calling the WTRE studio to sing in Haitian Creole.

“We just hope folks will tune in,” said Pratt. “It’s a fun, unique idea. We’re not aware of anything like it.”

The bands and artists participating are the following: Peggy Davison from The Angels (My Boyfriend’s Back); Garry Person, drummer of the Guess Who (American Woman, and These Eyes); Jimmy Olander from Diamond Rio; Mitch from Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels (Devil with a Blue Dress, and Jenny Take a Ride); Riders in the Sky (Woddy’s Roundup, and Happy Trails); Doug Gray from the Marshall Tucker Band (Can’t You See, and Heard it in a Love Song); Trout Fishing in America (When I was a Dinosaur, and Cup of Coffee); Grand Funk Railroad (We’re an American Band, and Some Kind of Wonderful); The Buckinghams (Kind of a Drag); Janie Fricke (What’re You Doin' Tonight, and Please Help Me I’m Fallin’); Brian O’Neal from the Busboys (The Boys are back in Town); B.J. Thomas (Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head, and Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song); Michael “Supe” Granda from Ozark Mountain Daredevils (Jackie Blue, and If You Wanna Get to Heaven); Jerry Martini, saxophonist of The Family Stone (Everyday People, and Dance to the Music); Howard Bellamy from the Bellamy Brothers; Sandy Yaguda from Jay and the Americans (Come a Little Bit Closer); Florance LaRue, lead singer of The Fifth Dimension (Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In); Iron Butterfly (In-a-Gadda-Da, and Easy Rider); Bob Ferreira from The Four Freshman (Day by Day, and Graduation Day); Billy Idol’s guitarist, Steve Stevens (Mony Mony, and Cradle of Love).
