Hoosier farmers recognized for achievements

Indianapolis — State Representative Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) congratulates the Bredewater Farm from Decatur County and Herin Estate Farm from Jefferson County for receiving the Hoosier Homestead Award.

The awards were presented last week by Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann and Agriculture Director Gina Sheets at the Indiana Statehouse.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes families with farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more. The Bredewater Farm has been operating since 1909, and Herin Estate Farms has been operating since 1911. Both are recognized for their hard work and commitment to agriculture.

“It is an honor to have two outstanding farms like Bredewater and Herin Estate in my district,” said Rep. Frye. “Their commitment to Indiana’s agriculture industry has been a staple of our state’s economy. They are respectable members in our community and deserve our recognition.”

The program began in 1976 to acknowledge the contributions these families have made to Indiana agriculture. More than 5,000 farms have been recognized since the program was established.

Two awards ceremonies are held each year, in the spring and summer, to commemorate the achievements of the many outstanding Hoosier farmers across the state.

“These two farms are two of many outstanding farms in Southeast Indiana,” said Rep. Frye. “Because of farms like Bredewater and Herin Estate, Indiana continues to grow and provide resources to people across the nation. Indiana was built on farming, and even with changes in the industry, our state is growing and developing because of its farmers. Bredewater and Herin Estate farms have dedicated their skills and service to Indiana for more than 100 years, and I wish them the best for the next 100.”
