Update: Shooting claims life of boy, 13

Greensburg — A Greensburg boy has died following a shooting at his home on North Carver Street Tuesday evening.

Following notification of family members, Decatur County Coroner Charity Banks confirmed that Craig Roberts, 13, of 1031 North Carver Street, died Tuesday from a gunshot wound sustained at his residence.

Greensburg Police were dispatched to the scene of a shooting at the home at approximately  5:43 p.m. Tuesday, Greensburg Police Detective Bill Meyerrose said. The victim was pronounced dead at Decatur County Memorial Hospital.

The GPD issued a press release Tuesday stating the victim died as a result of a single gunshot wound fired accidentally by a sibling. The firearm was left out in preparation for cleaning, the release said.

"This serves as a reminder that all firearms should be treated as if they are loaded, and that firearms should be stored and locked away from children who might be curious about a firearm," Greensburg Chief of Police Stacey Chasteen said via the press release.

An autopsy was scheduled to be conducted Thursday morning in Marion County.

Meyerrose said Tuesday that crime scene technicians with the Indiana State Police assisted at the scene. Further assistance came from the Decatur County Sheriff's Department, Greensburg Fire Department, Decatur County Coroner and Decatur County EMS.

The tragic shooting, the second in as many weeks, led Greensburg Community Schools administrators to again enact its crisis management policy. Greensburg Junior High School principal Matt Clifford said school administrators, counselors and clergy met early Wednesday. to discuss the situation prior to the start of school. A later meeting briefed teachers on the situation.

The school brought in additional counselors from Greensburg Community High School in order to help students grieving the loss of another classmate.

Tyler Hall, 14, was shot to death by his father Gregory Hall last month. Clifford said students were just beginning to come to terms with Hall's death when Tuesday's events occurred.
