Travel conditions updated through new phone service

County travel advisory downgraded to “Orange” Thursday

Greensburg — Following Wednesday’s eight and a half inches of snowfall, the Decatur County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) established a new call-in line local residents can use to learn present travel conditions.

EMA director Rob Duckworth told the Daily News that Decatur Countians can call 812-222-7623 (ROAD) at any time to receive the latest travel updates or advisories.

The recording, Duckworth said, informs callers of any travel restrictions as well as the conditions of roads throughout the county. Duckworth said if any specific roads are closed or have become impassable, the recording will be updated to reflect that information. Callers are advised not to leave messages as they will not be returned.

The EMA director set up the line in response to numerous calls placed to the Greensburg Police Department, Decatur County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police Versailles Post Wednesday and Thursday. Duckworth asked that residents seeking information regarding travel conditions use the new hotline in lieu of calling law enforcement offices.

EMA members met with other county officials Thursday afternoon, electing to downgrade the county’s travel status to “Orange.” Under the “Orange” or “Watch” designation, motorists are encouraged to travel only if necessary.

At press time, Duckworth said he expected the “Watch” designation to persist into Friday morning.
