Vote centers striving for accessibility, flexibility

Greensburg — Sometimes called a Super Precinct, a vote center is where any registered voter in Decatur County can go to vote.

Lifestyles are not the same as they were 40 or 50 years ago. We have more households where both people are employed outside of the home. People travel farther for work and entertainment. Vote Centers offer voters the flexibility of voting at any of the seven locations on Election Day.

The traditional paper poll books will be replaced with the electronic poll books which will maintain the integrity of the poll book, reduce human error and prevent anyone from voting more than once, whether voting by mail or in person. The traditional bipartisan team of poll workers will still serve the voters.

Currently Decatur County has 20 precincts with voters using eighteen 18 polling places. Each poll is staffed with five poll workers plus two alternates who are ‘on call’ for a total of 133 workers. Utilizing Vote Centers would reduce the poll locations to seven and reduce the total number of poll workers to 55 plus 14 alternates for a total of 69.

As with most public services, elections can be expensive. The 2012 Presidential Elections cost Decatur County $88,029.39. The 2011 Municipal Elections cost the City of Greensburg $26,207.60 while the County paid the remaining $3,105.79 for a total of $29,313.39.

The Decatur County Clerk is an ex-officio member of the County Board of Elections and Chief Registration Officer in charge of voter registrations in counties having a population of less than 125,000. Deputy Clerk Faith Koors serves as ‘election deputy’ and is in charge of conducting elections. She is assisted by the Clerk and the ladies who work in the Clerk’s office.

Absentee voting at the Courthouse will continue as it has- no changes, so those who wish to vote before Election Day may vote during regular Courthouse hours and the two Saturdays before an election.

The County Election Board’s next meeting is Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 2:30 p.m. in Room 106 (big meeting room) in the Courthouse.

This meeting is open to the public.

If you have questions and/or comments and cannot attend this meeting, call the Clerk’s office, 663-8223; email us at, votereg@decaturcounty.in.gov or clerk@decaturcounty.in.gov.

Future meeting dates will be announced.

A patriotic spirit pervades Metamora where the Ben Franklin III is docked along Main Street. The boat was built in 1989 to resemble canal boats of the mid-19th century and is pulled by Belgian draft horses. The Whitewater Canal historic site is at 19073 S. Main Street, Metamora.
