Fertilizer spill closes CR 700 South

Greensburg — GREENSBURG – Public safety responders with the Letts Volunteer Fire Department (LVFD), Greensburg Fire Department (GFD) and the Decatur County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) responded to a report of an unknown substance on the roadway on CR 700S, west of SR3 shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday.

The LVFD and GFD arrived on scene and closed the road from the visible spill along the roadway for about half a mile. The Decatur County Sheriff’s Department (DCSD) responded and compiled witness statements describing a truck hauling a leaking tank.

The truck involved was located and discovered to be operated by Tompson Farms of CR 700S. The spill area was within 100 feet of Wyaloosing Creek watershed and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) was contacted by the EMA.

The DCSD was able to locate the vehicle and the owner coordinated a response and cleanup of the 28 percent liquid fertilizer from the roadway and the soil area near the roadway. The total volume involved is expected to be 200 to 300 gallons.

More information will be released as it is made available to the Daily News.

Also assisting with the incident were the Decatur County Highway Department, Summit Environmental and Kova, Inc.
