Community “Stars” turn Aspen Place contest into yearly affair

Greensburg — Tracy Henningsen and Heather Simpson were the grand prize winners Thursday night at Aspen Place’s inaugural “Dancing with the Stars” dance competition.

Brian Robbins and Heather Miller took runner-up.

According to organizer Erin Miller, community relations representative for Aspen Place, the event was modeled after the popular ABC TV show. In place of Hollywood stars, however, Aspen Place’s version featured local community leaders and public servants, including Greensburg Chief of Police Stacey Chasteen, Greensburg Fire Chief Scott Chasteen and Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) Board of Trustees Chair Toni Collins — among several others.

The judge’s table was similarly staffed, with DCMH Director of Community Relations David Fry, DCMH Vice President of Support Services Robin Meyer, Greensburg Community Schools Superintendent Tom Hunter and Decatur County Sheriff Greg Allen.

Co-organizer Diana Robbins told the Daily News that she knew the event would be great fun, but that it nonetheless exceeded expectations.

“We’re already planning next year’s event,” she said. “We’ve already got a couple dancers signed up. Everyone’s very enthusiastic about doing it again.”

Both Robbins and Miller and Henningsen and Simpson received perfect scores of 40 from the judges for their routines, leading to a dance off.

Robbins and Miller won the dance off, but not the grand prize. According to Diana Robbins, the grand prize was awarded by the audience, and Henningsen and Simpson walked away with it.

Competition Judge David Fry said he’d be happy to participate again next year.

“We had a lot of fun with it,” he said. “I just kept saying things like ‘you had a nice transition there,’ — you know, stuff you hear on the TV show. I didn’t really know what I was talking about, but it was a blast.”
