Three teens dead in two-vehicle crash

Ripley County — Three South Ripley High School FFA students were killed in a two-vehicle accident in Ripley County Thursday morning.

Indiana State Police Sgt. and Public Information Officer Noel Houze told media the Ripley County Communications Center received a 911 call at 9:46 a.m. Thursday reporting a serious crash at the intersection of Fairgrounds Road and County Road 850 West in western Ripley County.

According to Master Trooper Ben Bastin, a 1999 Dodge Ram 3500 driven by Thomas D. Crawford, 17, of Dillsboro, was eastbound on Fairgrounds Road. At the same time, a 1996 Ford F250 pickup driven by Timothy C. Bowman, 17, of Osgood was northbound on County Road 850 West. Preliminary reconstruction findings indicated both vehicles disregarded the stop sign at a four-way stop and the Dodge struck the F250 broadside. After impact, both vehicles traveled off the roadway approximately 100 feet into a cornfield in the northeast corner of the intersection.

Killed in the crash were Bowman, Jacob Vogel, 18, of Versailles, who was a passenger in the F250, and Samantha R. Hanson, 18, of Holton, who was riding in the front seat of the Dodge Ram.

Crawford suffered chest injuries in the crash and was transported to Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville. He was later transferred to University of Cincinnati Hospital.

Also injured were Caleb M. Cumberworth, 15, of Holton, who suffered a minor injury to his hand and was transported to Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville, and Kayla Adkinson, 15, of Holton, who was also transported to Margaret Mary Hospital with unknown injuries.

All six individuals involved in the crash were students from South Ripley High School attending an FFA function at Hopewell Church just south of the crash scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

Assisting M/Tpr. Bastin was Sgt. Mark Helms, and M/Tpr. Jeff Cumberworth. Also assisting at the scene was Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, Holton and Versailles Fire Departments, Ripley County EMS, and the Ripley County Coroner’s Office.
