County off to a good start

Decatur County Community Schools has experienced a smooth transition into the new school year, according to superintendent Dr. Dan Roach.

Some minor adjustments had to be made to bus routes in order to keep loads even between vehicles. As compared to this time last year, the corporation has an additional 28 students.

This, Roach noted, could pose a challenge if they were all in the same grade level, but if they are of different ages, they can be dispersed through the student bodies of individual schools. The true story of the numbers will prove itself with time. The official count day will take place in September.

Although the beginning of the year can be a busy time, Roach knows the real challenges of the year will come as the months begin to pass. ISTEP+ testing will begin Sept. 15 throughout the state and must be completed by Sept. 26. Tenth graders have a narrower window of only two days to complete their GQEs - between Sept. 16 and 18.

Roach is optimistic the year will go well throughout the corporation.
