GREENSBURG – For the month of July, Art on the Square Gallery, 114 E. Washington Street, Greensburg, is pleased to present a show of photography and art work done by clients at Developmental Services, Inc.
“Special Reflections” features oil paintings and photos created by these clients over the past year in a program encouraging artistic pursuits.
Developmental Services, Inc. is a 501-C-3 not-for-profit organization that provides services for adults and children with mental, physical and emotional disabilities. DSI was established in 1975 and provides early intervention for infants and toddlers, residential living options, job training, placement and follow-along, respite care, family support, individualized-community based services and many other services listed on their website www.dsiservices.org. In Decatur County, DSI programs are based at the Decatur Developmental Industries building at 115 N. Michigan Avenue.
The local DSI Photography Club, whose members’ works are in this show, is coordinated by staff member Carrie Shumaker. There are 12 clients involved in photography at this time. Members go out into the community each month to take photos. “I like to go out in the community and take pictures,” said one club member. “It gives us something else to learn how to do each day.” Another stated, “It is interesting and helpful as I did not know much about photography before I joined the club and learned how to use a camera.”
Also included in the show are paintings by clients who have taken art classes with Billy Dilkes at Art on the Square Gallery and Betty Blake at her studio classroom. Support for the art programs comes from DSI, the Arc of Decatur County, and Tri Kappa Sorority.
Local DSI program director Jenny Maddux said, “We have seen so many talents emerge from our clients that we did not know existed. Through their paintings and photography we can see a bit of how they see the world.” The art program help DSI fulfill its mission “To provide services and supports to people with barriers to attain self-direction, inclusion, personal fulfillment, and productivity in all life,” and their vision “The elimination of barriers that restrict individuals with disabilities from community inclusion.”
Join these talented artists and other gallery artists from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 11, at Art on the Square Gallery for the special reception for this show. Meet the artists, see the photos and paintings and enjoy refreshments.
The exhibit will be open during regular gallery hours Tuesday to Friday, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
