Decatur County farmer Scott Schoettmer, who donated his time and the use of his combine, recently harvested a 28-acre corn field as part of Greensburg-Decatur County Greensburg Bread of Life 2019 Farmers Feeding the Flock fundraiser. “We got it done, but it wasn’t easy,” said event organizer Merrill Smith. According to Smith, Schoettmer began the harvest and all went well until his combine broke a gear box. Schoettmer had to travel to Effingham, Illinos to get the $3,800 replacement piece. With Schoettmer’s donation of time and equipment and the Premiere Ag donation of fuel, the 28-acre plot was harvested with an average yield of 160 bushels per acre. Final numbers from this year’s fundraiser are expected to be released Nov. 1.
