NEW POINT – The 5th Annual June Bug 5K Walk/Run is scheduled to take place June 22, starting at 9 a.m. at the Salt Creek Township Park.

This year, businesses donating $100 or more will have their name printed on the back of 100 or more of event T-shirts and receive a shirt after the event.

Last year’s Kiwanis-sponsored event raised more than $1,900 to fund youth programs and provide scholarships for graduating high school seniors from South and North Decatur, Greensburg High School and Oldenberg Academy.

The New Point Kiwanis hopes to do better this year.

June Bug 5K organizer and Kiwanis President Mark Vice said, “It’s just a good opportunity for people to enjoy the beauties of nature around New Point, and we really like to think we’re helping the youth of the county reach their life goals!”

Vice continued, explaining that last year’s net provided a $700 scholarship and helped the New Point Kiwanis by giving them seed money for a walking trail in “their neck of the woods.”

“We are working with the REMC to help them build a walking path near the Salt Creek Township park, so we’ve also got our eye on bettering the community of New Point, making it more attractive for people moving to the county,” Vice said.

The Kiwanis of New Point offers a reduced $10 participation fee to DSI and New Horizon clients and to Special Olympics participants.

Registration for the June Bug 5K begins at 8 a.m. with the walk/run starting at 9 a.m.

The registration fee for individuals is $15 in advance and $20 the day of the race. Families of four may register for $45.

All pre-registrants (before June 7) are guaranteed a shirt.

When asked why the event is called the June Bug 5K, Vice said that he was noted for his way with words.

“I remember coming up with the name ‘The Whistleberry Festival’ for a baked bean dinner we had once,” he said, laughing. “After that, it was my job to name things!”

Registration forms are available at the New Point Community Center, by contacting 812-716-1450 or 812-716-1450, or by sending an email to mbvice@etczone.com.
