A Richmond bank robber was apprehended in Greensburg Tuesday night, the collaboration of efforts between the Greensburg and Richmond Police Departments.

According to Greensburg Police Chief Brian Heaton, Craig Allen Sandefur, a resident of Greensburg and formerly of Richmond, was located in Greensburg after the GPD was contacted by the Richmond police, stemming from a bank robbery on Tuesday.

“The bank robber was located in Greensburg and the Richmond Police came over and got him,” Heaton said.

According to the Richmond Palladium-Item, about a dozen tips led the RPD to contact officers in Greensburg only hours after Sandefur had robbed the U.S. Bank at 800 E. Main Street in Richmond. The GPD went to the last known address for Sandefur Tuesday night at about 7 p.m. He reportedly answered the door and was apprehended, being held until Richmond Police arrived to question and arrest him. According to the Palladium-Item, the bank teller who witnessed the robbery was able to pick Sandefur out of a video lineup. On Wednesday, Sandefur was sitting in the Wayne County Jail on charges of robbery, a Class C Felony. Upon conviction, Sandefur could face up to eight years in prison and fines up to $10,000. His bond was initially set at a $15,000 surety bond.

“Everything worked out pretty well,” Richmond police Lt. Brad Berner told the Palladium-Item. “As soon as it went up on the (Palladium-Item’s) Website, we started getting calls from people saying ‘Hey, I know him.’ We even got a call from a former employer. We developed information that (Sandefur) may be in Rushville or Greensburg so we contacted police there,” he said. “Greensburg police did some good work. They helped us out quite a bit.”

Sandefur has been in trouble with the law before. He robbed the First Bank Richmond branch at 3403 E. Main St. on Nov. 21, 2006, the Palladium-Item reported. According to the paper, Sandefur confessed to the bank robbery to police.

Additional information was obtained from the Richmond Palladium-Item and the Associated Press.
