The North Decatur football team improved to 2-0 Friday night with a 41-6 victory over Mid-Indiana Football Conference rival Edinburgh on the road.

The Chargers jumped out to a big 28-0 lead after the first quarter, enabling North head coach Garry Sauley to call off the passing game in the third quarter.

“It was a good team win,” said Sauley afterward. “Everyone seemed to contribute something to our success and that was a big part of why the game turned out the way that it did.”

A special teams takeaway established North’s success early. Senior Brock Ricke blocked a punt on the first series of the game that he recovered in the endzone for a touchdown, according to Sauley.

Later in the game, senior Grant Ricke returned a forced fumble by Stephen Nobbe for a touchdown.

North gained 319 total yards of offense. Donovan Meyer led the charge on the ground with 10 carries for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

Brock Ricke added nine carries for 78 yards and two scores, while Lane Geis tallied four carries for five yards.

Ricke passed 5-for-9 for 77 yards.

Receiving stats: Clay Bedel 3 catches, 31 yds; Lane Geis 1 catch, 39 yds; Josh Weintraut 1 catch, 7 yds.

Defensively, Alex Crowe tallied two tackles, an assist and a sack.

Other defense: Brock Ricke 1 tackle 1 asst, sack and blocked punt for a TD; Adam Kennedy 2 tackles, 2 asst, 1 sack. Stephen Nobbe 1 tackle for loss, forced fumble; Chris Jarman 2 tackles 2 asst.; Grant Ricke 1 tackle and 3 asst.

Interceptions: Clay Bedel and Lane Geis.

“With the heat, it was very important for us to get good games from our substitutes,” said coach Sauley, “and Stephen Nobbe, Chris Jarman and Adam Kennedy did a great job filling in and giving us a chance to rest some of the players playing on both sides of the ball. Their contributions were a big part of our success Friday night. It was a good team win. Everyone seemed to contribute something to our success and that was a big part of why the game turned out the way that it did.”
