GREENSBURG — As they do yearly, the Decatur County Family YMCA is hosting a free summer feeding program.

According to the local Y, they are a four-year sponsor of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).

Not only will these meals help hundreds of children get the nutrition they need for good health, but it will also help alleviate the strain on family food budgets when school is out.

At various sites around town, free meals are now available for children ages 18 and under, and they are welcome to visit as often as they would like.

This year, the YMCA is hosting fun activities in addition to serving meals.

The program is funded through a grant from Walmart and the Indiana Department of Education, and is also made possible by volunteers who donate their time serving meals.

The program runs until July 26.

Free meals are available at the following times, days and locations:

• From 5 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays at the Greensburg Public Library.

• From 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Briarwood Apartments (beginning week of June 10)

• From 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Windermere Apartments

• From 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at North Park

• From 11:15 a.m. until noon Monday through Saturday at the Decatur County Family YMCA

Registration is not required.

According to director of the local Y’s Summer Feeding Program Shawna Evans, in the span of just two days they have provided meals to approximately 300 children. In the past, she said they’ve seen similar numbers.

The local YMCA previously has served more than 21,000 free summer and after school meals in the span of a year.

The program is quite popular.

“This is a very big thing,” Evans said. “The kids we’ve served look forward to seeing us and coming out. Sometimes, it’s just hard for some of them to get a meal. They are so grateful.”
