The Daily News Female Athletes of the week are Greensburg eighth graders Chelsea Hersley and Molly Oesterling.
Hersley, who played on Greensburg's eighth grade girls basketball team, led her quad to a 35-18 first-round win over Shelbyville Saturday.
Hersley scored a game-high 15 points while Greensburg increased a 9-7 halftime lead to 23-12 after the third quarter. She led a second-half defensive press that stifled Shelbyville and limited it to six fourth-quarter points. Hersley tallied four rebounds, four assists and two steals overall.
Molly Oesterling, an eighth grader who swims in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breastroke events, has deepened the waters in nearby swimming pools and Greensburg's own.
Oesterling, one of the junior high swim team's most accomplished swimmers, made history this week. She came into last week's meets within reaching distance of two school records that her older sister, Annie, held for six years.
Molly was within one second of Annie's time of 28.03 seconds in the 50 free, and within 1.5 seconds of Annie's 100 breastroke time of 1:21.47.
According to head coach David Kuhns Thursday, Molly Oesterling broke at least one of her sister's school records. The new marks were not available at the time The Daily News went to press Friday.
