BLOOMINGTON -- Third time’s the charm.

That is the case for Lily Grimes, who finally made the podium at the IHSAA State Finals after making it there for the third time on Saturday.

Grimes, with a throw of 42-feet, 11.75-inches, finished fourth in the state.

“The goal, throughout all of high school, has been to finish on the podium at state,” Grimes said. “After doing it and being so close, I want more definitely, but I am just honored to have gotten here and to finish where I did.”

Grimes also earned a position on the Indiana All Star Track Team set to compete next Saturday in the Midwest Meet of Champions at Michigan State University.

Saturday was as busy of a day for Grimes as it gets.

She celebrated her graduation ceremony earlier Saturday morning prior to the State Finals, but it was an even busier season and high school track career for the senior.

Grimes entered the State Finals undefeated in the shot put event for the 2019 season. She opened the campaign with an indoor season Hoosier State Relays Shot Put Championship and continued to dominate in the outdoor ring.

Grimes out threw all her competitors as the Decatur Central Invite Champion of both Shot and Discus, East Central Invite Shot Put Champion, Decatur County meet Champion of Shot and Discus, EIAC Champion of Shot and Discus, Sectional Shot Put Champion and Regional Shot Put Champion.

Grimes not only won all the regular season shot put events but she also broke meet, stadium, and school records.

She set new shot put records for the East Central Invitational, Sectional 24, Franklin County Stadium, and the Greensburg High School Record.

Grimes was also just shy of breaking the school record in discus with a 131’5 throw making her the 2nd greatest discus thrower in school history.

Her fourth place finish earned the Lady Pirates six points in team standings, which gave the team a 37th place finish in the team competition.

Teammate Brenner Hanna completed her sophomore season with a 14th place in the 1600 with a 5:09.58. She improved on both her seed placing and her seed time that was entered into the State Finals.

Hanna also placed 26th in the 800 with a 2:28.98.

Hanna’s 2019 Track Season proved to be a testament of all her hard work by earning EIAC MVP as the 800, 1600 & 3200 individual champion, Sectional 1600 Champion, many other individual championships and a new school record in the 800.
