Led by Zach Ferris and Nathan Kroger, the South Decatur Junior High earned third-place in the middle school division at the State Archery Tournament held March 14 at the Indiana Fair State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.
Ferris shot a 284 and Kroger a 283 to finish among the top five males at the state event. Ferris was the top seventh grade marksman and was fourth out of 448 middle school age shooters. Kroger was second behind Ferris among 143 seventh-grade shooters and was fifth overall.
“To have two of the top male archers in the state is quite an honor,” said coach Julie Blaich. “These two boys have worked hard to get that honor and I have several more that are fighting for that honor.
“The whole team is working hard and to be in the top 3 in the state was an awesome accomplishment."
In the high school division, South Decatur was represented by six archers, under the direction of coaches John Gant and Matt Eden.
The third-place state finish by the junior high team earns them a spot in the National meet, held the first weekend of May at the Expo Center in Louisville, Ky.
Several teams from South Decatur, Greensburg and North Decatur were represented at the annual event. Also competing were:
• Greensburg's contingent finished fifth among 39 teams at the high school level.
• The North Decatur Elementary group was 15th out of 19 teams.
• The North Decatur Junior High team was 19th out of 40 teams.
• The South Decatur Elementary team was 9th out of 19 teams.
